FILM: “Wisdom to Survive: Climate Change, Capitalism, & Community”

June 8 Service

When travelers from all parts of the empire arrived in Jerusalem for the Festival of Weeks, they came speaking their native languages... until in one great moment called the Pentecost.  In that moment all language barriers fell away and the visitors could understand not only each other's languages but their unity in the Holy Spirit. This moment will be marked, as it is by Christian churches everywhere, by the Guilford Community Church tomorrow at the 10am service. New members Shirley Clark, Melvin Meyer and Beverly Langeveld will be welcomed and the jubilant music of Sheasby Matuire, a well-known Zimbabwean, will embody the universal joy of shared musical traditions. Dr. Sheasby Matiure is a renowned player of nyunga nyunga mbira, ngoma and marimba, as well as an accomplished choral leader. The choir will also offer the favorite anthem "One Love" by Bob Marley. Anyone wanting to sing in the choir should arrive by 8:45 for rehearsal. Pastor Lise Sparrow will offer a homily on the amazing diversity of gifts humanity can bring to bear for the sake of the earth and each other. Scripture readings will include 1 Corinthians 12:3b-13 and Acts 2:1-21.

The Sunday School will spend the last half of the morning preparing for next week's Graduation Service and the teens will prepare for the upcoming trip to New York City. Guilford Community Church is an Open and Affirming Congregation of the United Church of Christ.  The building is fully handicapped accessible and hearing assistance and an ASL interpreter are provided.  To find the church, drive one mile south of exit 1 on route 5 and turn left just beyond the Guilford Country Store.   For information call 257-0994 or 257-2776 or check out the website at www.guilfordchurch.org. Everyone is welcome.
