May 12 is Mothering Sunday and the Guilford Community Church, United Church of Christ, will celebrate Mother Earth and all who mother the children of the earth. Music for the day, under the direction of Andy Davis, will include the Flower Carol, a traditional carol; “The Earth is Our Mother”, a Native American hymn from the Hupa tribe of California; and “Ahmede Muhammad”, a muslim lullaby. Hymns for the day include “Mothering God” and “Morning Has Broken”.
Rev. Lise Sparrow will reflect on the story of Hagar and Sarah, two mothers important to Islam, Christianity and Judaism and whose lives reflect the struggles and satisfactions of many women. Tilden Remerleitch, a member of the church, who has been working since her graduation in Ecuador, will share a bit about her work with children who suffer the impact of environmental changes on Ecuador’s coast. The children will then have time for Sunday school, continuing to learn about children in the Middle East. After church, at 11:30, Remerleitch will make a fuller presentation on Fundación Raíz in the Houghton Room for anyone interested.
Wednesdays the church welcomes those interested in Centering Prayer for a time of meditation in the sanctuary from 4:20 to 4:50pm, followed by a brief discussion in the Houghton Room until 5:30. The group is currently reading THE UNIVERSAL CHRIST by Richard Rohr. Everyone is welcome.
