The Sunday, August 2, 10am service is the first of a four Sunday series during which Rev Lise Sparrow will offer final words to the congregation of the Guilford Community Church, U.C.C.
Rev Sparrow has served the church for over twenty years and will retire the end of the month and then stay through September to support the incoming pastor, Rev Elisa Lucozzi.
The service will focus on giving thanks. The scripture for the day is taken from Genesis 32 featuring Jacob’s struggle with the angel and the anointing of Jesus by Mary Magdalen. Rev Sparrow will offer reflections on both stories in relation to the struggles and joys faced at the end of Jacob and Jesus’ lives. Music for the day produced by Andy Davis with the help of Aiden Meyer will include the virtual choir pieces: “I Want To Thank You Lord” and “God Beyond All Names” as well as a pre-recorded version of “I’m Lucky There’s a Sun” and hymns “I’ve Got Peace Like a River” and “God of the Sparrow”. The children’s story was written by Sue Owings based on a true event and her grandchildren join her in reading the story. It is a Service of Holy Communion so those participating are encouraged to have bread and wine or juice at hand. Peter and Mary Alice sing the Communion Hymn, a Taize chant, “Eat This Bread”.
