Progressive Christianity celebrates the Christ “in all and everything” and the May 19 service at Guilford Community Church, UCC, will celebrate Christ’s presence in the blessing of Curtiss Reed Jr and Cathryn Griffith and their life together. This blessing will take place in the context of the regular service, a service which will explore what it means to live a life of faith in relationship with Christ. Music for the day includes “Ukuthula”, a South African anthem, “Love me Tender” by the Everly Brothers and “I Will Arise and Go to Jesus”, and African American spiritual. Rev Lise Sparrow will offer a homily reflecting on a contemporary adaptation of John 1-14 and on the lectionary reading for the day found in Acts 11:1-18. Children below the age of twelve will attend Sunday school after the blessing and nursery care is provided. After worship there will be a special workshop including Advanced Directives with Jenn McCalley and planned giving with Ana Saavedra of Edward Jones to learn about tax benefits, different options for making gifts. Everyone is welcome.
Wednesdays the church welcomes those interested in Centering Prayer for a time of meditation in the sanctuary from 4:20 to 4:50pm, followed by a brief discussion in the Houghton Room until 5:30. The group is currently reading THE UNIVERSAL CHRIST by Richard Rohr. Everyone is welcome.
